Men’s golf looks to build on success, challenge for OAC title

by Jordan Houser

With only six tournaments this spring, the men’s golf team is working to make the most of every opportunity.

During March, the team posted their lowest score in recent years in their own Purple and White Invitational. Brian Zenk, Clay Rice, Stephen Moller, Mark Williams and Wes Holler combined for a season best seven over par (295) in the first round of the tournament.

The invitational was held at West Chester Golf Course in Canal Winchester, Ohio. Although the team struggled during the second day, they still managed a tie for fourth place.

This upcoming weekend the team will compete in the OAC Spring Invitational hosted by Otterbein. The tournament will be held at Little Turtle Golf Club in Westerville, Ohio. “In the OAC fall we tied for third and didn’t play our best. If we play well this weekend, we should be able to make a run for second place and close the gap between us and Otterbein.” Mark Williams, second year golfer, said.

It will be a tough road for the Crusaders this weekend, as they will be leaving behind one of their star players. Clay Rice will be unable to compete in the OAC Invitational due to illness.

“Clay makes a huge impact on the team. Individually he has won two tournaments this season, but we’re a very talented team and we know that someone will step up and fill his spot.” Williams said.

Rice will be returning for the OAC Championship Apr 27-29. This final tournament will be held at River Greens Golf Course in West Lafayette, Ohio and the winner will receive a bid to the 2012 NCAA Division III Golf Championship.
