Buckminster Fuller Society

by Andrew Floor

The Buckminster Fuller Society is a nonpartisan political organization built on discussing contemporary political and humanitarian issues in a nonbiased way, in order to find the truths of said issues.“We invite speakers from both sides of certain issues and beliefs and then we also try to pose a neutral side as well.  From this, we try to have students formulate their own opinions from what is presented.  We choose what we look at and discuss from what our members want to look at and discuss.  We really aren’t an argumentative debate club so much as a fact finding club,” Senior Political Science Major, and President of the Fuller Society, Kourtney Selogy, said.

In the previous year, the Fuller Society hosted, ‘Bexley Voting 101’ for the 2011 General Election.  This event hosted the mayoral race candidates and allowed them to discuss their platforms, as well as other local candidates, and the Ohio League of Women Voters.

The main part of the event was the presentation of both sides of the controversial Senate Bill 5 voter referendum.

This semester, the Fuller Society has two main events planned to discuss the issue of fracking, as well as corporate influence on everyday life.

“We plan to have a geologist that works for the EPA as well as a representative from BP to discuss both sides of fracking because it affects many of our members hometowns.”

“From January 30th – February 1st, we will be viewing the film series, Manufacturing Consent, which is a documentary that shows corporate bias and influence on everyday mannerisms and information sources.”

University Professor, Dr. Michael Hiltbrunner will also be lecturing on this issue,” Selogy said.

The Fuller Society has their main events and meetings every Tuesday in one of the Blackmore Library study rooms, at 6:00 pm.  All students are welcome to show up and discuss their opinions.
