Crusader athletic pride: spring sports report

by Aaron Butts

With men’s and women’s basketball already in full swing, the Crusaders are looking forward to the upcoming spring season which is right on the horizon.Men’s golf returns the 25th of February as the Crusaders compete in the Irish Creek Invitational in North Carolina, followed up by the Purple and White Invite hosted by Capital March 22nd.

So far the golf team has had its ups and downs, finishing third of five at the Ohio Dominican Invitational, fifth out of twelve in the OAC Fall Championship, seventh out of ten at the Kenyon Invitational, and eleventh out of fifteen at the Wittenberg Fall Invitational.

Coming off of last year’s tremendous Men’s Basketball season, winning both the OAC tournament and OAC Championship, expectations were set high for the 2012-13 season, and the men didn’t disappoint. With a 8-1 record in the OAC, and a 11-5 record overall the Crusaders are well on their way to another successful season. Last night they saw their first loss in recent weeks, losing 69-68 to Marietta from a last second buzzer

Women’s basketball as well is doing well with a winning record of 5-3 in the OAC, and 10-5 overall. Last night the women beat Marietta for the 49th consecutive time with a score of 67-56.

The next game for the women’s basketball team will be in Baldwin Wallace on Saturday and will actually be broadcast on Sports Time Ohio.

The Baseball team starts off their season at home this year on March 6th, coming off of last year’s 15-22 season which was marked with some disappointment, but also hopefulness after improving the team’s all around record and batting average from the season before.

With not a single senior on last year’s team, most of the roster will stay consistent in March when the team can hopefully push off of the slight momentum of last season to improve yet again on their record.

Softball is hoping to have another successful season after finishing last season with a 21-17 record overall and six wins in the OAC, as well as an average of .97 home runs per game which is 6th in the entire NCAA Division III. The women return to play at home this year, on the 21st of March against Denison.

The track team has already kicked into gear with their first event last weekend at home, in which Cory Smith set a new Capital record for the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.76, and Andrew Appelt barely beat the record for the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.17.

Other wins at the event included the men’s 1-mile run, men’s 400-meter dash, women’s 200-meter dash, women’s 400-meter dash, women’s pole vault, women’s high jump, and women’s triple jump. Emma McCarron won the women’s 3,000-meter run, running it in 10:32.44, only 4 seconds behind the school record.

This Saturday the track team heads to Westerville for the Otterbein invite for hopefully another successful group of events.
