‘Harry Potter Month’ puts a spell on campus

by Barbara Keegan

Activities Management & Programming has deemed the month of January, “Harry Potter Month”.The group plans to show all eight Harry Potter movies and have coordinated events based around each one. Events will take place each Tuesday and Thursday.

On January 8th AMP had their own “house sorting.” After taking a quiz, the participants were sorted into one of the four houses – groups that exist within the school of Hogwarts, the wizarding school that Harry Potter attends.

AMP hosted a scavenger hunt before playing the second movie and served “Butterbeer” (a drink of the wizarding world) during the screening of the third film.

Meg Gates, AMP’s Public Relations Chairman, was very pleased by the turnout to the events so far.

“Some AMP events we’ve been excited about haven’t had a big turnout,” she said. “[But] 100 students showed up for the first movie, 25 participated in the scavenger hunt, and 25 to 30 people for the second movie.”

The idea of Harry Potter Month came from a conference that Gates had attended.

“We talked about movie series that have been popular on campus, [and chose] Harry Potter,” she said. “We thought it would be fun to incorporate events [into the showings] and people are excited about prizes.”

One of the many prizes AMP has been giving away is Harry Potter T-shirts. The first forty people that arrived to the movie viewing on Tuesday received one of these T-shirts in a size of their choice.

There are still plenty of opportunities to get your own shirt, as well as a variety of other prizes, before the month is over.

Tonight, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire will be showing at 9:00 in RUFF LC 202. At 8 p.m., an hour before the movie, AMP will be in the MDR hosting a “Tri-Wizard Tournament”.

Tuesday, AMP will be showing Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix at 9 p.m. in the Schneider Multi-Purpose room. The reigning Lip Sync champions will be performing along with the movie.

Jan. 24 at 8 p.m., they will host a muggles version (or non-magical version) of Quidditch, the biggest sport to the magical community. This will be held at the Cap Center, while the showing of the movie Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will be in LC 202 at 9 p.m.

On the 29th the showing of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 will be shown at 9 p.m. in the Schneider Multi-Purpose Room. This also doubles as a costume contest for fans to showcase their best witch or wizard outfit.

The last movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, will be shown on Jan. 31 in LC 202.

An hour before the movie there will be a Harry Potter trivia game in the same room. Prizes will be given out all night, and the team that gets the most points will be awarded the “House Cup”, a prize that is given to the house that has worked the hardest in the movies.
