Giant Eagle soon to offer ‘express’ grocery store, new restaurant

by Aaron Butts

Giant Eagle has recently announced the opening of a brand new grocery store location in the heart of Bexley. For those familiar with the chain, this may be surprising as Giant Eagle is known for its large supermarkets, and since Bexley is a smaller community with limited space, there seems to be no room for such a monstrosity. Instead of erecting a mega market, Giant Eagle has created its own type of “express” grocery store that more closely resembles a deli than a supermarket.

“As an extension to the Market District supermarket, Market District Express customers will see, smell, and taste the best of the Market District experience in a more-intimate store setting,” Giant Eagle spokesman Dan Donovan said in a recent interview with the Columbus Dispatch.

The store itself will be two stories tall and have roughly 30,000 square feet of store available to the consumer. The location will provide not only basic grocery needs, but also a breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu for shoppers on the go.

This will be a tremendous addition to the community for students at Capital who are sometimes hesitant to cross Alum Creek to shop at Kroger. What’s also exciting for Capital students is the location, which will be directly across from campus at the current location of Bexley City Hall and Bexley Square Shopping Center, within easy walking distance of campus. It will undoubtedly receive tremendous business from the Capital and Bexley communities for years to come.

Bexley Mayor Ben Kessler was unable to be reached for comment, but with the recent developments made to Main Street, city-wide improvements will be continuing for Bexley.
