The Drexel Theatre will be closing its door for renovations this spring, expected to close on March 21.

According to theater director Kevin Rouch, the remodeling plans include a complete renovation of the theater lobby and concession stand, as well as the entrance way. The marquee will also see significant changes.

“The marquee is our face to the world,” Rouch said. “We are excited to restore it back to its original luster with all of its neon color and lights.”

Each remodeling project will remain true to the Drexel’s art deco theme.

“We plan to enhance the style,” Rouch said. “We want people to be able to walk in and be able to say that it looks even more like it did in 1937.”

Along with the remodeling efforts, the Drexel is currently testing new seats. It is still being decided at which point to phase in the new seating for each theater.

Since the theatre is only steps away from Capital’s campus, students have mixed feelings about the theatre’s temporary closing.

“I am disappointed to hear the Drexel will be closed for a portion of my last semester, but I am excited that the theater is getting renovated and look forward to its completion,” said Zach Hoover, senior electronic media and film student. “I believe improvements such as new chairs will enhance my movie-going experience.”

The updates are not the only change that will be coming out of the temporary close. According to Rouch, the time will allow for more opportunities to plan for programming and customer service.

“Since we are a small staff and work different shifts, it is rare that we are all able to sit down together,” said Rouch. “The dark period will afford us the ability to sit down all together and do some really fun planning.”

The Drexel staff has ideas to work more with Capital, too.

“We want to make that a deeper relationship,” said Rouch. “The closing will give us a chance to plan and meet with people and do more with Capital and their students.”

This relationship with the theatre could offer several opportunities for Capital students.

“The idea of [Drexel] having more programs with Capital excites me,” said Ryno Tan, a junior electronic media and film student. “It sounds like it is going to be great.”

The estimated closing date of March 21 will allow for the Drexel Theatre to still hold their red carpet event as well as their sci-fi marathon.

Meetings are still being held to discuss the details of the renovations. A date for the reopening has not yet been set.
