The university’s Center for Health and Wellness has recently changed some of its policies and its range of services in its continued partnership with the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center.
A new service for students this year includes a free consultation with a registered nurse (RN) to present any symptoms they may be having.
The RN will look at a patient’s height, weight and vital signs, as well conduct a health history and offer further advice on treatment.
This can give a person a good idea of what may be wrong without being charged the fees that come with some of the tests run by a physician or nurse practitioner.
Walk-in hours are held Monday, Wednesday and Friday 8-11 a.m., as well as Tuesday and Thursday 3-6 p.m.
Students can refer to the RN or just make an appointment with the nurse practitioner right away.
In terms of medical services, students can seek medical appointments from the Center of Health and Wellness at no cost.
The wellness center can test for a variety of different illnesses and can provide treatment for common infections like strep throat and the flu. They also provide contraceptives, physicals, blood draws, and allergy shots.
Testing can also be performed on-site for students, and the fee will be charged to their student account. Off-site testing fees and prescription costs through a local pharmacy fall on the student.
Students are to make sure the financial aspect of their care is covered through health insurance.
“It is the student’s responsibility to make sure their insurance covers the care they receive at the university,” Jennifer Speakman, Title IX coordinator and disability services director, said. “Students are encouraged to see if their insurance is accepted by OSU Wexner Medical Center.”
The center also focuses on health promotion and disease prevention through the use of brochures for patients.
Health and wellness has walk-in hours with the nurse practitioner are Monday through Friday, 9-11:30 a.m. Students can also schedule appointments to be seen Monday 1-6 p.m., Tuesday-Thursday 1-4:30 p.m. and Friday 1-3 p.m.
With the emphasis on Title IX this school year, the wellness center reiterates that they have free counseling sessions for students. This includes individual, relational and group therapies, all conducted by trained mental health professionals and trainees under their supervision.
If a person has an ongoing mental health condition, they may be referred to a nearby location for more long-term or intensive therapies.
The center’s page on the Capital University website also provides several outside resources regarding topics such as dating abuse, eating disorders, fitness and nutrition and mental health.
The Center for Health and Wellness strives to provide proper care for all students, whether it be on site or elsewhere and hopes to promote health throughout the campus community.
