Bexley mayor dies of cancer at 64

After nearly a year of battling pancreatic cancer, Bexley mayor John Brennan died Monday at the age of 64.

Brennan announced his diagnosis in February, but told voters that he would continue to fight the cancer throughout his re-election campaign. The campaign was successful, and Brennan won with 67 percent of the votes.

The city’s flags were lowered to half-staff in memory of the mayor when an assistant was alerted of Brennan’s death.

In his first year as mayor, Brennan helped to save the city more than $1 million, and campaigned to create a more budget-conscious mindset for the city.

Brennan vowed to continue his duties as mayor despite the cancer, and often juggled chemotherapy and treatments with meetings and mayoral duties.

Despite his lack of presence in City Hall, Brennan frequently worked from home, and held regular meetings with his staff, keeping up with events in the city.

Ben Kessler, president of Bexley City Council, has been serving as acting Mayor since Jan. 12, when Brennan’s leave of absence began, and Kessler will serve as acting mayor until the Bexley City Council elects a new Mayor.

Calling hours for the Mayor will end today at St. Catharine Catholic Church, and funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday.

The city is planning a memorial service for Brennan that may take place within the next two weeks.
