Greek life organizations initiate new members

by Jordan Houser

Baby butterflies, along with pledges from other Greek organizations, are coming out of their cocoons achieving active membership status in their respective fraternities and sororities.

The months of February and March mark an especially busy time of year for teh diverse Greek organizations on Capital’s campus as they select and initiate new students into their respective institutions.

The organizations extended bids to prospective members Jan. 27. After bids went out, those prospective members were then allotted just a limited amount of time to decide whether to accept.

These bids are formal invitations to join the organization and are officially administered through the Student Involvement Office, which oversees much of the recruitment and initiation process.

For most, the decision to join Greek Life was made long before bid day. For those who hadn’t decided, however, it was more hectic.

“The time crunch made the decision nerve-racking, but also that much more exciting. In the end, I’m glad I made the decision I did,” Mark Williams, a second year student and new member of Sigma Alpha Beta, said.

After bid day, each organization had a formal ceremony to induct the prospective members into their pledge class.

When the ceremony is complete, the prospective members have officially become pledges of the organization.

Following induction, each organization has their own set of requirements before the pledges become active members.

For some organizations, initiation has already taken place. Other groups such as Alpha Sigma Phi and Phi Kappa Psi have yet to initiate their new members.
