Members of both bands, Symphonic Winds and Wind Symphony, have an opportunity not presented to the campus at large. Musicians who play in these bands are able to join a national honorary band sorority: Tau Beta Sigma (TBS).
Chartered at Capital in 2005, TBS “operates primarily as a student service and leadership recognition society whose chief aim is to assist the Director of Bands in developing the leadership and enthusiasm that they require of their band.
“[Their] goals are not only to provide the band with organized and concentrated service activities, but to give our membership valid and wholesome experiences in organization, leadership, and social contacts” according to tbsigma.org.
To become a member of TBS, students must have a 2.5 GPA and be involved in a band at Capital, but the group goes beyond just band activities.
TBS is a service and social sorority that aims to make the band program better, junior Tami Hurlburt, TBS president, said.
“I knew all the people, they are great people to talk to, and they are my role models,” Hurlburt said.
I joined because “everyone was friendly and welcoming and support each other in all parts of life,” sophomore Sarah Gracy, vice president of membership, said.
TBS at Capital is part of a larger group of over 230 chapters of TBS nationally. The Capital chapter, Iota Epsilon, plans to host a block party for their entire district, which includes chapters in Ohio, Ill., Ind., Wis., Ky. and Mich.
Upcoming events on the TBS calendar include a Valentine’s Day sale of chocolate roses and Hershey Kisses roses in the conservatory and in the P.O. Lobby Feb. 8-14.
Members will also sell Donatos Pizza in the conservatory Feb. TBS will also hold a Mary Kay sale in conjunction with the Dance Team Feb. 23-Mar. 21.
“The conservatory is a huge thing,” Gracy said. “We support all music. By supporting us, it supports them.”
