Asian American Alliance celebrates 4th Annual Lunar New Year Celebration

Photo by Uele Boxill The Asian American Alliance (AAA) celebrated its 4th Annual Lunar New Year Celebration Friday, February 5 in Huntington Recital Hall. Traditional Chinese dances, music, and martial arts were performed in celebration of the holiday by the following groups and individuals: The Ohio State University Pi Delta Psi Fraternity; Dance of the Soul from China; Eric Paton and Rachael Zordon on the Taiko drums; OSU Oriental Dance Troupe; and Dragon Phoenix Wushu Team.

The Chinese New Year (sometimes referred to as the Spring Festival) celebrates and honors household and heavenly deities in the Chinese tradition, as well familial ancestors.

Following the ancient Chinese calendar, each year is marked by one of the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac: the dog, dragon, horse, monkey, ox, pig, rabbit, rat, rooster, sheep, snake, and tiger. This year marks the Year of the Monkey, whose holiday is celebrated Feb. 8.

After the performances, AAA’s celebration continued with a reception held in the Crist Room with food provided by Jade Bowl House Restaurant.
