Zachary Conaway, Austin Reid, and Hally Shah were chosen as the winners of ReCap and received a prize of $50 each.
ReCap is the literary arts magazine on campus. The magazine has been printing for about 40 years. ReCap publishes the work of students as well as others interested in submitting. Recap has also published authors from across the country and professional authors and writers.
ReCap publishes poetry, photography, creative non-fiction, fiction, and art.
Conaway wrote a creative fiction piece called “Be Good.” The story focuses on a street musician staring a new path in life. Reid’s poem, called “The Neighbor’s Hate” focused on his personal experience as a Jewish student. Shah submitted a mixed media piece called “Untitled 1″ that expressed her feelings during a certain point in her life.
“Just do it. You don’t have anything to loose by submitting your work,” Zachary Conaway, senior, said.
There is a selection process involved in ReCap. Every submission is reviewed by the editors and each editor gives the piece an up vote, a down vote, or no vote. After the submissions that will be published have been selected, the editors then read through every piece to find any mistakes.
Students interested in submitting their work to ReCap should visit recapmag.org. Once there, the student can go to the online submission service and upload their work. Students should look for announcements as to when ReCap is accepting material for the magazine. The web issue of ReCap will be printed this spring.
The course recommended prior to submitting material is English 204. This course will give students the foundation of creative writing.
“[ReCap is] just a good creative outlet for students … It’s a way for them to get experience publishing, writing, and to get experience in a magazine,” said Kevin Griffith, English professor and ReCap adviser. “It gives our students good experience accessing which pieces are the best and looking at some of the best writing from across the country.”
