Fan vote decides: Niekamp headed to DIII All Star Game

by Jordan Houser

Senior Spencer Niekamp will play in the 2013 Reese’s Division III College All-Star Game March 23 in Salem, Virginia.

Inclusion of players in the All-Star game was decided by a panel of judges that took into account career and season statistics. Two additional spots remained available, with eight contenders for the position. Niekamp was voted by fans to fulfill the final spot on the All-Star team.

This season alone, the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) bestowed Niekamp with First Team All- Region and Academic All-OAC honors.

As senior foward, Niekamp led the crusaders to a 19-7 overall and 16-2 conference record in the 2012-2013 season. The team dominated in regular season play but were upset by Mount Union in an OAC semifinal match.

Despite the disappointing outcome of his final season, Niekamp played a vital role in the success of the Crusaders, who were OAC Champions for the 2011-2012 season.

The upcoming All Star Game gives Niekamp an opportunity to perform in a final game as a collegiate athlete after his tenure as a crusader has ended.

Former Albion Coach Mike Turner and former York coach Jeff Gamber will coach the All-Star teams. This will be a new experience for both coaches, who have recently retired.

The NCAA offers fans the opportunity to watch their favorite players compete in the All-Star game without planning travel time to coincide with the game. Live video coverage will be available on the NCAA website.
