Hunger Games reaches SAB and The Resident Housing Association

by Maura Fortino

Capital University is having Hunger Games fever. Capital’s Sigma Alpha Beta (SAB) hosted Capital University’s very first Hunger Games in Feb. Social chair of SAB Emma Littmann, junior, took on the role of gamekeeper.

While the inspiration for the name of the games comes from “The Hunger Games” book and movie trilogy, the actual rules of the game were inspired by Assassin, a game Littmann played in the residence halls last year.

The game is played by assigning each player a target and the goal is to clip the target with a clothespin while no one else is present.

If you clip your target, you now have to “assassinate” their target. While the games did not involve any physical harm to the students like in the books, it did generate a lot of publicity that the real games receive.

Using Twitter, the members of SAB used #SABhungergames to get those not in the fraternity interested. As the gamekeeper, Littmann kept people up-to-date by posting a “BANG” every time someone “died,” and even made short videos each night to recap that day’s kills.

The members of SAB really enjoyed the games and took them very seriously, especially Marcus MtCastle, senior, who chased a lot of people around who were not even his targets.

“Marcus caused a lot of mayhem and left quite a path of destruction,” Littmann said. However, his tactics seemed to have worked considering he made it to the final show down and was eventually crowned victor.

“One of my goals was to find a longer-lasting event that wouldn’t cost anything, but could still be entertaining,” Littmann said. “This game allowed most of the fraternity to participate and to interact with one another.”

SAB is not the only organization on campus to have a Hunger Games themed event. The Resident Housing Association (RHA) is also having their very own Hunger Games. This event will follow the actual games more closely than SAB’s according to Vice President of RHA Samantha Plewes.

“Just like in the book, tributes will be drawn to compete in the games,” Plewes said. “Ideally two females and two males will be selected to represent their residence hall. There is a different challenge each day throughout the week.”

From March 17-21, the students will compete against each other. When a team wins a challenge, they earn points, and the team with the most points at the end of the games is crowned victor.

Students who did not sign up can still earn points for their residence halls by donating non-perishable food items.

While it follows the games more closely, RHA used the Hunger Games to bring students closer by creating a friendly and fun competition among the residence halls.

Good luck to all students participating in RHA’s very first Hunger Games and “May the odds be ever in your favor.”
