Gallery recognizes student talent at art show

The annual Student Art Show will host its reception 5 – 7 p.m. this Friday 13 in the Schumacher Gallery, located on the fourth floor of Blackmore Library. The Student Art Show is one of student, faculty, and staff’s favorite shows in the Schumacher Gallery. It takes place each year near the end of the Spring Semester.

Friday’s reception will showcase the hard work and talent of Capital University students. Submissions to the Student Art Show are open to everyone, not just those with art-related majors. On average, 250- 300 submissions are received each year and the Gallery accepts as much as they can fit. This year 140 pieces were selected from about 50 students.

Prize and purchase awards will be given out at the reception, with President Denvy Bowman choosing first. The awards change each year, but there are always a good amount.

“I wouldn’t say that any one award is better than the rest,” Dave Gentilini, assistant to the gallery director, said. “We try to spread them out so that one student doesn’t get eight awards.”

Luk Bartkowiak, senior Art Therapy and Studio Art major, has 5 pieces in the show this year.

“Last year was the first time I sold any of my artwork, and I sold two pieces,” Bartkowiak said. “I’m excited to sell more this year.”

One of Bartkowiak’s pieces from last year is currently displayed in Yochum Hall.

“It’s cool that I have art displayed on campus,” he said. “That’s a rewarding thing.”

Gentilini says Schumacher Gallery has really appreciated the amount of support this show has received in the last few years from the campus community, mainly University administrators purchasing works for the University collection.

“We’ve had a lot of participation and it’s nice to have all the interest,” he said. “Hopefully, the students come because it’s their work. The show is always a lot of work for us, but I love doing it.”

The Student Art Show opened April 10 and runs until April 27. The Gallery is open 1-5 p.m. Monday- Saturday.
