‘ReCap’ welcomes fall submissions

by Autumn Laws

Capital’s literary and art magazine, “ReCap,” has exciting changes going on to help broaden their audience and submissions.

The magazine publishes both an online and print issue, available in the fall and spring, respectively. The online issue was debuted last fall, and the staff is still exploring the new options this method of publication opens up to them. Taking advantage of the capabilities open to web publishing, ReCap will be accepting music submissions for their online issue this fall.

When asked about the new inclusion of music to the magazine, Max Quay, Editor-in-Chief of ReCap said the magazine wasn’t utilizing all the talent within the student body. There needed to be an outlet available to musically savvy students, and the online copy of “ReCap” seemed the perfect place for them. The editors are excited to hear a diversity of sounds, similar to the wide-range of students attending Capital.

In addition to the inclusion of music submissions, “ReCap” also became a national literary magazine last year, meaning that submissions are open to not just Capital students, but anyone of undergraduate age or above anywhere within the country.

The editors of “ReCap” really want to stress the importance of the magazine being read by people on campus. “Don’t read it just because you had something published in it,” Quay said.

Although reading the magazine is important, Josh Zimmerer, prose section editor, said from experience that submitting work is important too, because “to see your work in print is a great feeling.”

Having the opportunity to read other students’ work is not only great for the authors, but it can also give students a special look at the creative processes and products of their peers.

“ReCap” will also be hosting events throughout the school year, open to all Capital students, including readings and philanthropy work. In an effort to help spread the word about the magazine and events, “ReCap” will be utilizing Twitter (@ReCapMagazine) and Facebook. Interested students should keep an eye on the Twitter and Facebook profiles for further information.

Any student who would like advice or suggestions on a piece of writing, feel free to bring it to the Creative Writing Club, which meets every Tuesday at 9 p.m. in room 110 of the library.

If anyone is interested in submitting art, writing, or music, visit http://www.recapmag.org/ for submission instructions. For specific questions, contact Max Quay, ReCap Editor-in-Chief, at mquay@capital.edu.

“One of the hardest parts of being a writer is getting your content out there, so this is a great opportunity to get your ideas out there,” Geramee Hensley, poetry section editor of “ReCap” said. Submissions for the online issue are due Oct 31.
