After months of searching, the Office of Student and Community Engagement (SCE) has found a replacement for the assistant director position.
Jessica Wilson took the assistant director position two weeks after graduating from The Ohio State University (OSU) with a graduate degree in higher education and student affairs.
Much like her predecessor, she will be working with Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) and other student organizations. However, she has also partnered with the Office of Residential and Commuter Life to work with the commuter students on campus as well.
“It’s a full load,” Wilson said, “but I’m excited.”
Originally from Fort Worth, Texas, Wilson began her undergraduate studies at Texas State University, majoring in communication studies with a minor in leadership studies.
“Growing up, all I knew was Texas,” Wilson said. “My first time out of the state was my sophomore year of college.”
She participated in the National Student Exchange Program to finish her degree away from home. This program took her to Kent State University, where Wilson joined her sorority, Delta Sigma Theta.
During her time at OSU, she was a graduate assistant in the Health Sciences Scholars and Sorority and Fraternity Life programs.
“I did a lot of advising for the culturally-based organizations, [such as] the National Pan-Hellenic Council and their Multicultural Greek Council,” Wilson said.
Wilson chose to go on to work at Capital because of the close-knit community that the university has.
“I decided that I wanted to work at a small school to see the ‘small school feel’ that big schools are always trying to aim for,” Wilson said.
Moving forward, Wilson would like to raise the expectations of FSL and help push them toward higher standards.
“We’re having those conversations, like ‘What are your goals?’ and ‘What is it that you want to achieve and how can I help in that?’” Wilson said.
Since coming to Capital, Wilson has helped develop Summer Orientation, Move-In Day, and Welcome Weekend. She also coordinated Treats with the Greeks and the SCE Fair.
She is all about communication between SCE and the different organizations on campus.
“I can’t fix a problem if I don’t know about it. If there’s something positive happening, I can’t praise it if I don’t know about it.”
Wilson encourages everyone to not be afraid to contact her if something is needed.
“My door is always open,” she said.
