Chordsmen to perform at homecoming

by Tori Metzger

The Chordsmen of Capital University will be singing the alma mater and the national anthem at Capital’s Homecoming football game beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday Oct. 6.

After performing at last year’s Homecoming game, they are eager to perform again.

“We contacted Chris Lindeke, the Capital University Sports Information Director, last year to explore the possibility of singing at the homecoming game and he agreed,” Chordsmen Director Craig Courtney said. “It turned out to be an exciting experience for us and so we contacted Mr. Lindeke again this fall.”

According to Courtney, Chordsmen has been working on the National Anthem and the school Alma Mater since their first rehearsal in August.

They rehearse twice a week as a group, but their commitment shows more.

Each section also meets independently to rehearse throughout the week.

The last two years have shown a triple in size for Chordsmen. Their growing success is much attributed to their experiences of bonding within the rehearsals, fraternity, and community.

“We begin the year with a four hour retreat that is a mixture of rehearsal, fun, and food,” Courtney said. “We take our music seriously and strive for excellence, but we laugh a lot too.”

Chordsmen will be joining the other Capital University ensembles in Friday’s Homecoming Choral Celebration at 8 p.m. in Mees Hall.

You can also find them performing at Christ Lutheran Church Oct. 28, at a fundraiser for Coalition of Care in Newark Nov. 4, and at Capital’s Annual Christmas Festival.

“It is an honor to represent our university and our nation in this way and the venue, which is so different from our usual performing spaces, provides a great learning experience,” Courtney said.

“The students really enjoy singing together and welcome any chance to perform.”
