Is Cappie the Crusader an acceptable mascot?

Danielle Shevitz –  Shevitz does not like Cappie the Crusader. She believes that the mascot is insensitive to religions that are outside of Christianity. Shevitz states, “Some of the things that happened with the crusades don’t represent the values of Capital.” If given the chance, she would change the mascot to “almost anything else, really.” Preferably, she says, she would want the mascot to be a narwhal because they are not culturally insensitive. Also, an elephant because she is a big fan of elephants.

Sarah Bishop – When asked about Cappie, Bishop replied, “I don’t really know what a crusader is.” Being blind to the underlying stigmas of the mascot, Bishop would simply like to change the mascot in order to make it sound catchier. She would rather our mascot be the Capital Canines, because “when you first hear it, Canines sounds much fiercer than the Crusaders.”

Bryce Lake – When asked about our mascot, Lake stated that he loves Cappie. He believes that Cappie “provides a sense of courage and strength, and every time I see him, I just know our crusaders are going to take home the win.” When asked if he would change the mascot if given the chance, Lake said he would never even consider it. When thinking about this, he asked, “What would we even change it to?”

Orion Brock – Brock believes that Capital should not keep the Crusader as its mascot, because it does not “represent the diversity that Capital strives to achieve.” If given the chance, Brock would change the mascot to “the Capital Crabs, because that would be meme central.” But also, on a more serious note, having Capital’s mascot be anything but a Crusader would definitely lessen the blow to diversity.

Zella Stull – Zella does not see a problem with our mascot because of the modern times we are living in. She states that if this were the 1500s, the mascot would be “absolutely unacceptable,” but since we are living in more liberal time, there is no problem with having Cappie the Crusader.

Mikayla Lesnick – Lesnick starts off with a bold statement, saying “personally, I hate our mascot.” She does not have a particular reason for disliking our mascot, she just wishes it were an animal. She would prefer something cute, like a polar bear. Unlike the others in this interview, she does not hate the Crusader, she just wishes that our mascot was something that was a little more memorable.
