In May of this year, PepsiCo released a promotion over the summer called “The Lost Treasures of Baja Island,” along with two new Mountain Dew flavors: Mountain Dew Baja Gold and Mountain Dew Baja Mango Gem. They also rereleased Mountain Dew Baja Blast, as they have for the past few summers.
Mountain Dew Baja Gold is a strictly pineapple-flavored Dew; and it is good, but not amazing. Baja Mango Gem was pretty good, but not the best thing that Mountain Dew has to offer.
The promotion was on treasuresofbajaisland.com where you had to input codes found on the inside of bottle caps for all three flavors. For every bottle code that you entered, you had a chance to win $1,000 in a daily drawing. For every set of all three flavors, you got one entrance in the grand prize pool.If you were chosen from the grand prize pool, you would receive a six-pack of a brand-new flavor called Mountain Dew Baja Deep Dive.
Naturally, I tried everything I could to maximize my odds of winning. Unfortunately, the Mountain Dew Baja Gold bottles at the nearby Market District did not have codes on the bottle cap, so I only managed to get one grand prize entry.
Between that and the fact that PepsiCo was only distributing 18,000 boxes, I was not very confident in my chances of winning.
When cans finally started rolling out, I was ready to “bite the bullet” and buy one from a reseller on eBay, where cans were going for more than $100 dollars. Luckily, the purchase was delayed–because one of the winners happened to be me! I was assured by members of the Dew Drinker Discord that the price would likely drop with time.
So, today I bring you what is probably the most important Mountain Dew Review of my career so far. Knowing that I could get more than $100 by selling this can made it hurt to open it.
I had previously read that the drink was layered with three different flavors; but, after drinking it, I can confirm that this is not the case. I can definitely taste the Baja portion of the flavor; however, the rest of it is difficult to describe. It tastes pretty similar to Mountain Dew Baja Blast, but with more of an overall fruity flavor as opposed to a lime flavor.
It is pretty good, but I would not want to pay $100 dollars for it. The can, however, is very cool looking with several deep-ocean-inspired fish on the can. It will definitely be a highlight in my Mountain Dew can collection.
I will say that, overall, the experience of winning the flavor was very fun. It’s been a while since I’d been surprised with a new flavor that I have been excited about.
Supposedly, a new Dewstore drop with all the old Voodoo flavors is coming soon. Pitch Black is also rumored to be coming back soon. The future of Mountain Dew is pretty exciting, and until next time, you should “do the Dew.”
