McCarthy has said many times that he had no intention to impeach Biden—he has now changed his position since the launching of an investigation into Biden’s family looking for political corruption and lies in his previous statements.
Tensions rise within the House of Representatives as House Republicans pressure McCarthy to launch an investigation into President Biden as the election date approaches. Far right lawmakers threatened to remove McCarthy as speaker unless demands were met. The United States House Oversight Committee investigation into the Biden family was then launched on Sept. 12, 2023.
Reported by PBS, “House Republicans have uncovered serious and credible allegations into President Biden’s conduct,” Mr. McCarthy said. “Taken together, these allegations paint a picture of a culture of corruption.”
The claims are for wrongdoing consistent primarily to his son Hunter Biden and his business deals. Biden has been noted saying he wasn’t aware of his business dealings and, even during the 2020 elections, said he believed his son wasn’t making any money from his overseas business.
The New York Times finds McCarthy’s stating, “Eyewitnesses have testified that the president joined on multiple phone calls, and had multiple interactions, dinners” that “resulted in cars and millions of dollars into his sons and his son’s business partners.”
This is the third formal report to impeach a president in the past four years including Trump’s two impeachments.
As of now, House Republicans have not found or shown evidence of these situations occurring. They have also suggested that he used an alias email account to hide the corrupt behavior in office.
According to Oversight House investigators, “Records obtained through the Committee’s subpoenas to date reveal that the Bidens and their associates have received over $20 million in payments from foreign entities.”
The initial batch of reports into the investigation has yet to uncover anything incriminating.
According to The New York Times, a spokeswoman for the Republican-led-investigation, following the reports leading to no corruption, said, “It’s silly for anyone to try to draw conclusions from 14 pages of documents that the White House cleared to give to Congress…The Oversight Committee will continue to follow the money and evidence to hold President Biden accountable for his abuse of public office.”
A hearing is scheduled for impeachment inquiries with house republicans on Sept. 28 and is set to focus on “constitutional and legal questions.” The White House has called on the house as abusing power labeling their actions as “extreme politics at its worst.”
According to Morning Consult, nearly half of voters (48%) have shown support for House Republican’s recent impeachment investigation. Even stating that 36% of Democrats support the committee while 63% of Republicans show support.
There has not been a majority agreement among the parties on the steps moving forward. McCarthy has even said this is not an impeachment proceeding, but merely an investigation into misconduct and corruption within Biden’s family and administrations. Moving on as the committee persists, the investigations into allegations won’t cede.
