Nothin’ but boom

Most people wait until they finish college to start their careers.  But for four seniors, four years was too long to wait.  Seniors Parker Muntz, Brandon MacLean, Patrick Hearn and Zack Newkirk have started their own record label, Boomhouse Records.

According to their press release, “Boomhouse Records is a Columbus based independent record label that strives to bring the best music and minds to the forefront.”

The name and concept originated “a long time ago,” Muntz said, “About a year and a half ago we hit the ground running.  We have a little more pull now that we are seniors.  We know more people, so we thought this would be a good time to really get off the ground.”

MacLean described the label as “offering creative support throughout Columbus.  We don’t have funds for a bus or tour right now, so we’ve been doing a lot of shows and art galleries, where bands from Boomhouse will play.  We’re putting all of the creative aspects of Columbus under one roof.”

Although they might not have enough funds for a tour bus, “we are slowly garnering cash,” Muntz said.  The money will be used to fund a Christmas album to be released in December, and the label hopes to have a full album out in January.

Boomhouse currently has four bands on their label- The Blight, Alaska Awake, Apple and Baskets, and Forrest and the Evergreens.  All of the founding members of Boomhouse are in at least one of the bands.

“It’s fun [being on both sides of the music industry].  We have our hands dipped in a lot of things.  We can share fan bases and get new people to see us.  When you’re in one aspect of the music business, it’s better to be in all aspects,” Hearn said.

Will more bands join that list?

“We have a full plate at the moment, but that is a goal of ours,” Muntz said.

MacLean added that “if someone came up to us and wanted to join the label, I think we’d do it.”

Boomhouse does not specialize in one type of music.

“We’re global, baby,” Muntz said, “we’ll play any music that’s good music.  We’re like-minded as far as music goes, but we aren’t genre oriented.  We like good music, period.”

“[On the label right now] we have indie, funk and groove, soul, it’s really a wide collection.  We try to bring in different artists,” MacLean said.

Coming off of last weekend’s Halloween show, Boomhouse is planning for a Christmas show and album release concert at an undetermined date, though it will be before Capital goes on break.  For more information, go to http://www.facebook.com/boomhouserecords .
