New exercise org CHAARG invites female students for strength training

Changing Health, Attitudes + Actions to Recreate Girls, or CHAARG, as it is better known, will soon be adding a chapter on campus.

CHAARG is dedicated to women’s strength and fitness. “CHAARG has been liberating girls from the elliptical since 2012,” according to its website, and is about adding variety to women’s workouts and encouraging a community where women can share support for health and fitness.

Hannah Maynard, a Capital student who has been involved in CHAARG for a while, and is now working to become an ambassador and bringing CHAARG to Capital said, “[CHAARG] works on more than just fitness.”

Maynard first got involved in CHAARG when she saw some friends from other colleges posting on Instagram about the program. After looking into the program, she decided to get involved in CHAARG’s online community along with  some other girls from campus. As Maynard got more involved and met more people who were interested in CHAARG, she started the process of trying to get a chapter of CHAARG here at Capital.

A chapter of CHAARG has now been approved for Capital, although she still need to write a constitution, form an executive board, and attend a six-week training program. Maynard hopes to have CHAARG be a full-fledged group by the spring semester.

Maynard would like for CHAARG at Capital to work like a typical college chapter of CHAARG, where the women would perform a different workout with the entire group once every week called the Main Event. Just like other chapters, CHAARG at Capital would also put members into smaller groups, based on similarities in fitness, goals, and schedule.

These small groups are what allow members a chance to try out new workouts and recipes that they are interested in, which really personalizes the CHAARG experience. It also ensures that members are held accountable by one another.

A unique aspect that Capital’s CHAARG program is considering adding is a service element.

“I’m a very service-minded person,” Maynard said as an explanation for this change. According to her, “Capital already pushes us to do so much service,” so she saw CHAARG as the perfect opportunity to continue that mission of service.

Another interesting aspect of CHAARG is that it was stated on Ohio State University’s campus, which is a great resource for Capital to have as it tries to implement its own program. OSU’s chapter of CHAARG has even grown so much that members are now able to go on a CHAARG retreat.

This club will be coming to campus by the spring semester, but if people who are interested can join CHAARG’s online community or read more about what CHAARG is by looking at Maynard’s Instagram and following her CHAARG story on @hannahbeth_inchaarg.
