As the winter months are approaching, an application is pending for a Ski and Board Club at Capital University.
The club will aim to visit ski resorts in the surrounding area and provide club members cheap transportation and discounted prices at the resorts. This year they expect to visit Mad River and hope to visit Snow Trails next year, as well as resorts in surrounding states in years to come.
“If we could go out of state, I would like to team up with OSU ski club because they take trips to Colorado and Virginia,” Sean Roberts, club president and junior at Capital, said.
So far there are 19 students signed up to join if the club is approved. Females outnumber the males at least 2 to 1.
What do students need to join this club? Roberts says, “An ambition to become great at skiing or snowboarding while having fun and perseverance.”
Memberships to the club cost 25 dollars per semester to join. This payment goes towards any gear the club orders, including sweatshirts, hats, gloves, etc.
For all trips it will cost 10 dollars per student for transportation costs (the club will be taking Capital transportation) and $20 for a lift ticket at the resort. If students need to rent gear, they will need to pay for that as well.
For now the club only plans to travel on Friday afternoons because it’s the weekend and there aren’t many afternoon classes for students to attend.
Mad River offers lift passes to college students for $20 from 4 p.m. to 3 a.m. when the resort closes Friday nights, so club members will get the most for their money.
“If it gets approved, I will just be glad to have an outlet that students can participate in that is healthy and a good stress release from classes,” Roberts said.
Although students do not have to be members of the club to go on trips, members will get priority gear and transportation, as there are limited seats.
Roberts urges students to give it a try.
“Even if people can’t ski or snowboard they should still come out and have fun. There are experienced students who can help them learn.”
“I think it would be pretty sweet,” Clay Smith, a sophomore at Capital, said. “I don’t snowboard very often but I think the formation of a club on campus would persuade me to go more.”
While many student organizations are directed towards certain demographics with a specific goal, this club is just for fun and anybody can join, no matter what demographic they’re a part of.
