Wilson, Stith victorious in presidential race

After a landslide election (330-50), Bobbi Wilson and Mitchell Stith defeated Alex Maney and Chris Boyd and are next in line to be the president and vice president of Capital’s Student Government (SG). Both were ecstatic when, on Friday, they found that they had won the election by a margin of 280 votes.

“We were both very excited!” said Bobbi Wilson, new president-elect of SG, “Mitch and I put a lot of work into the campaign.” And it seems that all of their hard work has paid off.

Both Wilson and Stith are coming into their office next week with big plans for the next year ahead of them. Many of their plans focus around many of the plans that the previous administration has already put in place.

Current outgoing president of SG Brent Bowers expressed that one year in office is not enough time to get a lot of big-picture items accomplished:
“The only regret I have is not having more time to see more initiatives through to the end.” Bowers continued to say that he also regrets “not being able to operate under the new constitution and bylaws.” The new constitution is something that will be implemented in the next administration.

According to Stith, to get these initiatives done, they will need to “keep them in the minds of the administration.”

One of the biggest advantages that Wilson and Stith have going in is the relationship built by Bowers and Vice President Scott Rarick with the administration: “The thing I admire most about them,” said Wilson, “is their relationship with [President] Bowman and [Provost] Ashbrook.” Through this relationship they hope to make SG and the university as a whole more transparent.

But the overall goal of the upcoming administration is simple according to Stith: “Bottom line, it’s getting Student Government a better reputation.”

Stith expressed dismay that due to SG’s lack of transparency, some people viewed them only as the group that gave funding to student organizations. Stith says that a big part of their administration will be dedicated to proving to the students that “SG can do fun and exciting stuff too!”
