Organizations compete for the title in the annual Lip Sync competition Sigma Alpha Beta won the hearts of both the judges and the fans Wednesday night at the 2012 Lip Sync.
Using a Harry Potter theme, members of the co-ed Christian Fraternity dressed as characters from the best selling series and played out the story through song.
The performers entered the stage from each side as the infamous score from the Harry Potter movies played.
The song mix then cheerfully changed to B.o.B.’s “Magic” and quickly advanced. For the rest of their performance, tracks altered between being blithe and maniacal.
For each shift in mood, the opposing sides from the Harry Potter story took control of the stage.
After completing song bits for each major turn from the series, the performance was concluded with the score with which it began. The crowd offered a standing ovation.
The Ebony Brotherhood Association claimed second place. They opened with the beginning of Eminem’s “Lose Yourself,” and moved on through segments of other upbeat songs.
Their final song, “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston aroused an uproar of laughter from the crowd. One member emotionally mouthed the words to the song as the rest of the organization jokingly attempted to stop him.
In third place was fraternity Alpha Sigma Phi. The members of the organization donned Robin Hood costumes – down to the tights and feathered cap – and came out to the title song from the 1993 film “Men In Tights.”
The final piece of Alpha Sigma Phi’s mash-up was the LMFAO hit “Sexy and I Know It.”
At this point, the men stripped down to their underwear and ended their performance with a barrage of pelvic thrusts.
Judges implemented the same criteria as past year in ranking the competing organizations.
Creativity, originality, group unity, and theme were all taken into account. Unlike previous years, however, the judges were not faculty of Capital University.
For the first time, judges were acquired from outside of the university. This included an employee of Anthony’s Pizza, both an Ohio State University Graduate and a Student, and the bar manager of Barrel 44.
The winning quality for Sigma Alpha Beta was the consistency and creativity of their theme. The bold choice of Harry Potter came about at a group meeting and was agreed upon by everyone.
“At the meeting we all got together and it was decided as a group. It came up in discussion when we were making suggestions. It was all built on together” sophomore Kevin Smith said.
Members of the fraternity weren’t prepared the response they received from the crowd.
“None of us excepted how big it was going to become with the crowd reaction. It was amazing to see how much people recognized our effort and our organization. It was just an amazing experience.” Smith said.
The fraternity was very thankful for its experience, and even more so for the help with choreography, a key to their victory.
“We just want to thank everyone, but specifically Candice Goers, who helped so much with choreography” The organization was rewarded with $300 and a picture with the Golden Mic.
