Wednesday, Capital University’s Volleyball Coach, Pam Briggs, celebrated her 400th career win against Ohio Wesleyan University.
Briggs is in the midst of her 20th season as the head coach for Capital’s Volleyball team.
Other accomplishments of Briggs include being the 1995, 2002, and 2005 OAC Coach of the Year, as well as the 1996 and 2003 OAC regular season titles.
Capital’s Volleyball team consists of two seniors, four sophomores, and nine freshmen.
The win tonight sets the team’s record to 2-8. According to Coach Briggs, this season is going to be a highly competitive one for Capital.
“This season is our most competitive schedule in the 20 years I’ve been at Capital University. And my goal for this season is to introduce a national level of competition to allow for us to win a national championship within the next four seasons,” Briggs, said.
Briggs went on to explain that the biggest thing for the team to do right now is to become more aggressive and assertive in game play.
“The biggest thing we are striving for is to teach these young athletes to take risks. Gaining knowledge and working outside of your comfort zone is a daily struggle,” Briggs said.
“We want to give these new athletes the desire to try new things, to play without fear and we work on this every day. This game against Ohio Wesleyan is our first competition at home, and we want to defend our court and win.
“We want to show our home crowd our success and our commitment to hard work, my goal is to come out and play aggressively,”
The win tonight came from Capital sweeping three sets in a row.
The first one being 25-17, the next one being 25-14, and the final set being 25-18.
“We’re definitely coming together and we are giving it all we have. We are playing with our whole hearts and we improve at every game,” Sophomore player, Kelly Leonard, said.
“Being here on the team that helped get Coach Briggs her 400th win is really something amazing and special, and I know the whole team feels this way,” Freshman player, Olivia Arledge, said.
The volleyball team travels to Manchester, Indiana for the Manchester Tournament this weekend where they will hope to continue their winning ways.
