Who doesn’t love romantic comedies, especially as Valentine’s Day approaches? The Lovebirds is a 2020 film starring Issa Rae, Kumail Nanjiani, Paul Sparks, Anna Camp, and Kyle Bornheimer. The movie features a couple that have a wild love story ahead of them.

The couple consistently argues in the beginning of the movie after having been together for a duration of four long years. In the beginning, Leilani, Rae’s character, decides the couple should go to a dinner party. On the way to the dinner party, another argument leads to the couple breaking up. As the conversation ends, Jibran, Nanjiani’s character, accidentally hits a bicyclist while looking away from the wheel.

Oddly enough, the bicyclist runs away from the crash, and another character enters the scene. This character claims to be a police officer, displacing Jibran on the driver’s side of the vehicle. The new character, who was later dubbed “Mustache,” searches for the fleeing bicyclist, and he runs him over several times.

He then pulls a gun on Leilani and Jibran who witnessed the violence, but decides to run away after police sirens begin to wail. Jibran and Leilani are faced with the problem of what to do now given the consequences of the situation. They then decide that they have to solve the murder, and find out who wanted the bicyclist dead.

After agreeing to meet with an unknown woman named “Edie” at a bar, Leilani and Jibran are kidnapped and interrogated by Edie. Into the scene enters Brett, who aids in the interrogation. Leilani and Jibran manage to escape their tormentors.

Jibran and Leilani travel to an address they retrieved from Edie, only to be disappointed by a house full of frat boys. Mustache shows up to the apartment, and the couple has to flee.

The couple decides to attend the dinner party to see Keith, the party host. They then receive an invitation to a strange masquerade party, where the identities of Leilani and Jibran are revealed and taken into police custody.

After being interviewed by some detectives, Leilani and Jibran are promptly informed that they were key witnesses in the murder with the bicyclist. They are then let go, and they take a Lyft to get home. The Lyft driver happens to be the Mustache, who drives them to a remote location. A fight breaks out, leaving Leilani and Jiban safe, and the Mustache finally detained.

Despite all the arguing and disagreements, Leilani and Jibran realize that they are meant for one another, as they share a kiss in the back of an ambulance. The movie ends with the couple competing in a race to win a million dollar prize.

From references to Buzzfeed, to Instagramming, to Lyft ride-sharing, the modern twist to the film The Lovebirds is something I truly appreciated while watching it. At the same time, I found the romantic and comedic aspects of the movie to compliment one another.

The Lovebirds is certainly a one of a kind movie. It is packed full of unique content, and I really thought that the storyline was especially action packed and interesting, as well.

The actors flawlessly played their roles, and the movie flowed seamlessly because of this. I feel like every part of the movie had the audience interested in some way or another. With that being said, I would most certainly recommend the movie, especially to people who like romantic comedies.
