Last week, former President Jimmy Carter, announced his intention to run for President in 2024.
James Earl Carter Jr. was the 39th President of the United States. Since he only served one term, he is eligible to run for a second non consecutive term. This has only happened once in US history. Former President Grover Cleveland served as the 22nd and 24th President of the United States as he served two non consecutive terms.
Carter is currently 96 and would be 99 years old if elected as President in 2024. Carter explained his intentions by saying he was inspired by Biden and Trump’s commitment to serve even at their advanced ages.
Carter also did not want to allow Trump the privilege of becoming the second President to serve non consecutive terms. Trump plans to run for reelection in 2024 as well. While Carter did serve his first term as a Democrat, he plans to run this time around under a different party. President Carter has announced he plans to revive the Bull-Moose party which was created by former President Theodore Roosevelt when he attempted a similar non consecutive run for the Presidency.
President Carter’s campaign platform is expected to be targeted at the same people who voted for Carter back in 1977. He plans to expand medicare coverage to include free hearing aids and dentures for all citizens over the age of 70. He also hopes to increase funds to social security so that those who are already retired will be able to live more luxurious lives.
Carter has already been attacked by the Republican and Democratic parties. Republicans have called him a, “commi hippie who wants to destroy the American dream.” Democrats on the other hand have called Carter, “an elitist who is only running to help his close friends.” Carter responded by saying that, “this is a campaign for all Americans. It doesn’t matter your age. Whether you’re 60 or 85, this campaign is for you.”
Carter understands that the American people are looking to get back to a time when bipartisanship was more than just a word. The American people want to get back to simpler times when the political divide was not so deep. President Carter promises to be a President who lives in the past. Carter plans to fulfill Donald Trump’s promise to “Make America Great Again” by governing the same as Carter did when he was first sworn in as President in 1977.
Carter highlighted many key advancements in American society that occurred during his first term. Just during his first year in office, Apple Computer was incorporated, the first Star Wars movie was released, the first Chuck E. Cheese opened in California, Pontiac made the iconic 1977 Pontiac Firebird TransAm and not to mention the countless classic rock albums that were released that same year. It was pointed out to President Carter that none of those accomplishments directly correlated to his own political achievements. Before President Carter could respond, his wife reminded him that it was past his nap time. He retired to his quarters for a nap and abruptly ended his interview.
