Start caring about something that matters

by Andrew King

Ladies and gentlemen, it finally happened. Something made our student body care.

It’s October. We just had a round of elections for Student Government, there’s plenty happening on campus and a presidential election is upon us. There are plenty of things that you should care about.

But y’know what? Let’s worry about the guy running for homecoming queen instead.

As usual, the best place to look for information on this topic is Facebook, where intelligent conversation goes to die.

Monday evening was a mess. Some were spewing their opinions about the long-reaching implications of the idea. Others were preaching their support for the individual himself as well as all those who have ever been cruelly oppressed.

After arguments between uninformed, unintelligent people lasted all night, it became clear that enough people actually care about the homecoming king and queen to make a big deal out of this.

But it wasn’t until an anonymous letter popped into the Chimes inbox that the issue really got ridiculous.

“A student” sent an unsigned letter to us, hoping to have it published.

The content of this letter and the opinions of its unnamed author are  entirely irrelevant.

The important thing that this letter, along with others that I’ve received over the course of the last two years, shows the complete apathy and lack of courage that this entire campus shows on such a regular basis.

My question to you, Capital University, is what do you care about? What matters to you?

Are you going to worry about a perfectly harmless run for homecoming queen? Or are you going to focus your efforts on something that anyone will actually care about when it’s all over?

That’s not to say that there is anything wrong with being on homecoming court  or caring about homecoming court.

But when a ceremony in the middle of a division III football game becomes important enough to voice your opinion on, while countless other, more important issues go unnoticed, you’ve got a serious problem.

And for all those that think that sending an anonymous letter means you’re making a difference, get a clue. No legitimate paper is going to publish anonymous letters. It’s cowardly, informal and entirely useless. Why don’t you just tweet it?

In closing, there’s one person that’s doing nothing anonymously right now, and he’s running for homecoming queen. Maybe we should give him some credit for having the courage to not be afraid to put his name out there.

And while we’re at it, stop taking yourself so seriously and start doing something that anyone cares about. Life continues after college.
