Celebrating the university’s Annual Christmas Tree Lighting: ringing in the holiday season

  1. University President Dave Kaufman introduced the ceremony by exploring the mission of the season: “This tree is for everyone, regardless of your faith tradition. This tree is a reminder that the Capital family shines brightly… that by living our mission of transforming lives, we share our light with those in need.”
  1. One of five of the university’s choirs, Philomel performed an arrangement of well-known holiday tunes to kick off the ceremony. Back row (left to right): Donovan Slattery, Max Kramer, Henry Seifried, Benny Iraheta, Beaux Baldwin, Stephen Warner. Front row (left to right): Audrey Peer, Corinne Gorgas, Hannah Stewart, Dr. Lynda Hasseler, Cora Ams, Baylee Richardson.
  1. Beautiful paper lanterns with starry designs lined the paths around campus, making the 60-degree night feel a little more magical.
  1. Fraternity and Sorority Life intern Carter Campbell and Cap Cupboard intern Grace Djaodo discussed ways that the university is involved with the community and resources that are available to participate in the season of giving.
  1. Students and community members came together and counted down until the moment the tree lit up, decorated and topped with a twinkling star.
  1. Santa warmed up in the Schneider Conference Rooms in the Harry C. Moore Student Union, posing for pictures and listening to everyone’s Christmas wishes. While younger kids asked for toys and ponies, most university students asked for more sleep, ramen and energy drinks. Pictured (left to right): Natalie Drury, Santa, Tori Bennett, Emily Bennett.
  1. The tree seems a lot taller while standing right next to it! Adorned with ornaments, lights, a star and snowflakes, this tree serves as a reminder of the familial atmosphere on campus and in the surrounding community.
  1. Stealing Christmas spirit may seem like an insurmountable task, but with University Pastor Dan Hille’s dog Biscuit standing in for Max, the Grinch could probably get away with any holiday hijinks. The backdrop was set up for students and community members to get fun photos.
  1. Decorations around campus include wreaths and purple lighting, setting the festive mood leading up to the holidays. At night, the trees by the fountains are also lit up with strings of lights.
  1. It’s easy to appreciate the beauty of the lit-up tree from far away, but the details up close are too good to miss! The bright purple contrasts beautifully with the glowy snowflake lights.
