Phi Mu Alpha: Be the hammer, not the piano

Three conservatory pianos gave their final will and testament on Schaaf Lawn Tuesday evening as a part of Piano Smash hosted by Phi Mu Alpha.

Nate Lockwood, a junior music technology major, lead the event as head of Phi Mu Alpha’s fundraising committee.

“The idea isn’t new, our fraternity started smashing pianos nearly 20 years ago, but it hasn’t happened consistently in the last couple of years so we’re trying to revive it,” Lockwood said.

Amidst hard-driven music, destruction hungry Cap students paid $2 per swing ($5 per three swings) to collectively demolish three aged Baldwin pianos donated by the Conservatory.

Many attendees, like freshman music education major Zak Pytel, couldn’t get enough of the controlled chaos.

“It was awesome,” Pytel said. “I swung once and ran back to my dorm room to get more money.”

For those of you who missed your opportunity at carnage, Phi Mu Alpha plans to host a second Piano Smash this spring.
