Looking for a fun way to spend Pi Day weekend? Prepare yourself for “the longest live event in Capital history.”
WXCU Radio, in partnership with Capital University, is excited to host its first Radiothon Friday, March 13 through Saturday, March 14. The event advertises 24 hours of live broadcasting online at wxcuradio.com and activities in the Student Union Center. All proceeds will benefit the Furniture Bank of Central Ohio.
Friday’s happenings begin at 6 p.m. in the Student Union lobby with a performance by The Capitones and run till 10:30 p.m. Activities include a pie sale table, a Dance Dance Revolution station, “Mario Kart 8” and “Super Smash Bros.” gaming stations, Bowling for Soup (bowling at cans of soup), and a raffle. All activities will cost under $2.
But, if you think the fun is over already, you’re wrong.
Overnight, WXCU Radio DJs and the management team will live stream special segments online at wxcuradio.com. Features include advice from the Love Doctor, a reading of “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” by a special guest, a debate by the Capital Debate team, Meditation Hour led by Wes Meadows, and Coffee and Current Events with Tori Butash.
Activities resume Saturday at noon in the Student Union lobby and include the pie sale table, “Mario Kart 8” and “Super Smash Bros.” gaming stations, and an album shoot-out. The raffle’s grand prize winner will be announced around 6 p.m.
“WXCU is pumped about the Radiothon, because it is the biggest event WXCU has hosted in a long while,” said WXCU Events Coordinator and Marketing Director Maura Hope.
“We have been putting this together since fall semester, and we really think it is going to be something that the entire campus (professors included) can enjoy,” Hope said. “Our management team has been growing recently, and, with the addition of new members, we have really been able to improve WXCU all around and pool our efforts to create a fun and charitable event.”
Asked why WXCU chose to donate to a furniture bank, Hope, a junior marketing major, said she became connected with the organization through a marketing communications class. Last semester, her class helped design the bank’s marketing strategies.
“When we thought of the idea for Radiothon, we knew we wanted it to benefit a local organization that provides services to the Columbus area,” said Hope. “I talked to [a] representative and realized that this was the organization that we wanted to donate to.”
WXCU broadcasts 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year. Yet sophomore Zac Holley, who serves as the radio’s technical advisor, said WXCU doesn’t usually receive much attention from students.
“I’m really excited about the opportunity to get WXCU’s name on everyone’s minds,” said Holley. “…Radiothon will hopefully get everyone on campus buzzing about us.”
First year Miriam McCarty said Radiothon will be her first WXCU event and that she cannot pass up the opportunity to attend.
“I already have a group of girls I’m going with. This event gives us the opportunity to not only support WXCU, but also to spend time together, which we haven’t had recently because of spring break,” said McCarty. “I’m always looking to support groups on campus.”
In addition to WXCU’s management team, other Capital organizations helped enhance Radiothon. Pi Phi Epsilon will host a pie sale table in honor of Pi Day, while Capital’s new Gaming Collective will provide and run the gaming stations.
