Student Art Show

The odd mix of administrators, students, and Bexley residents were all at the Schumacher gallery for the same reason.

The white walls encompassing the center of the fourth floor of the library were adorned with paintings, photographs, prints, and digital art. Sculptures and television screens were posed on pillars, placed along the edges and in the corners. It was the opening ceremony for the student art show.

The event, which was last Friday, has become the pinnacle of the art department at Capital. It not only allows the student body to present their work to the public, but also offers the opportunity for them to sell their work. It has even become a prestigious honor for the President and the Dean to purchase artwork—something they have consistently done. But the success of the event was preceded by an unnerving amount of hard-work and planning.

“I cannot say the process is entirely a breeze,” said Carolann Dye, the student coordinator of the Student Art Show. “But the chaos of art show season is what I look forward to. Working with fellow student artists has been extremely fun. I love seeing the light bulb turn on as they realize how great their work really is and that they should not be ashamed to showcase their talent.”

The wide variety of artwork is also prevalent this year. Where in years past, the scope of the gallery has been strictly painting, photography, and sculpture, this year offers plenty of differing genres, including digital art and short films provided by the media students. Another major attribute of the student art show is that it accepts work done by students outside of the art department.

Displaying talent, sharing concepts, and bonding through the arts is what pushed me to help, and I could not be more pleased with this year’s show,” said Dye.

The student art show will be open in Schumacher Gallery 1-5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, until April 21.
