Representatives from student government met with interested students for this year’s second townhall meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Schuh room.
Although the agenda did not include the popular smoking topic this time, the group did discuss three interesting topics: the adding of January or May terms to the academic calendar, the restructuring of Student Government, and future renovations to the Campus Center.
The Deans are currently looking into the possibility of adding January or May terms. These would be short 4-6 week programs where students would take only one class for three hours a day. This would give students the opportunity to earn more credits in a four-year period or get credit for shorter service projects or study abroad experience.
“One of the main advantages [of Jan/May term] is that students might be able to use financial aid for these shorter terms,” Dr. David Summers, Assistant Dean of Humanities, said. “Right now students can’t use their financial aid for the summer term.”
The second topic discussed was the restructuring of student government. The group will be meeting this weekend to review their constitution. Students present said they would like better communication with SG and a way to ensure that more diverse people are involved.
The final topic of the night was future renovations of and improvements to the Campus Center. Several ideas are being considered for how to make the Campus Center more appealing to students so that they will actually use it on a regular basis.
Current ideas include changing the basement Rec Center into group organization space and renovating the Cru Club into a pub atmosphere. The administration is very interested in working with the student body to make sure that the building is place they want to be.
