After the winter break, student government started the spring semester ready to improve the safety of Capital’s campus in spite of the recent campus safety scares. The senate unanimously voted in favor of a resolution that could lead to the purchase a door reinforcement product called Bearacade.
As terror lingers over campuses across the nation, Capital does not seem immune to safety issues.
Last week, multiple Cap Alerts were sent out to students, faculty, and staff after a female student overheard a group of boys say an explosion would take place at the Student Union.
The senators that proposed the resolution stated that the door reinforcement could be installed in eight seconds and could withstand 4,800 pounds of force. The mechanisms could be applied to several doors throughout campus and would cost $60 per unit.
Despite the unanimous approval, several senators voiced concern for the financial, educational, and implementational issues that surround the product. Those interested in learning more about Bearacade can visit doorbaracade.com.
Along with the Bearacade resolution, the senate also passed a resolution to look into purchasing a computer for the CU Apartments for residents and other students that live on Sheridan Avenue. The senate stated that the building currently has a printer, but no computer, which creates difficulties for students if they are unable to print wirelessly.
Despite introducing and passing two resolutions at their first meeting back, president Jackie Niese urged senators to follow through more. This academic year, the assembly has passed several resolutions, which look into situations and issues, but has yet to pass a single bill, which would take action.
Some issues that the senate plans to focus on this semester are a smoking-free campus, reconfiguring or creating different majors and minors, and the safety of the students, staff, and faculty at Capital University.
