Spencer Saylor, senior music industry major, has been performing several places around the Columbus area. Saylor was known to sing with another local star, Chris Jamison, who recently starred on “The Voice.”
There were a number of different childhood influences that drew Saylor towards the music industry.
“I grew up with parents who heavily listened to classic rock,” Saylor said. “I can remember my dad strumming along to all the old bands. They were big fans of the Micheal Stanley Band, Van Halen.”
Those early range of influences have led Saylor to the genre-interchanging music he makes today. His first year roommate was Jamison, and they both shared an interest in writing and performing their own music. They decided they would start performing as an act together.
“That is when I really started to perform my own music. It was something that I never really had thought of,” Saylor said.
Saylor and Jamison performed music similar to that of John Mayer and Jack Johnson.
Saylor spoke of the great music community in Columbus and how it’s so different from his hometown outside of Youngstown. After performing in Columbus for a while things really took off for the duo. Some of the acts they performed with ranged from John Mayer to Phillip Phillips. They even opened for Aaron Cater during their first year.
“It was really cool and fun because we weren’t use to something like that,” Saylor said.
Since Jamison went off to do the popular vocal competition, “The Voice,” Saylor has been moving forward with his solo career.
“I have been doing more hip hop and pop music lately and really getting into it,” Saylor said. “It has been a really awesome experience.”
When asked to describe his music style further, Saylor said, “it’s Drake meets Jack Johnson with a touch of Lil Dicky. It’s not hardcore, in-your-face hip hop; it’s relaxed and more casual than that.”
A lot of his local notoriety has stemmed from social media. He has over 100,000 plays on Spotify with his single “24-7.”
“I can remember with that first show putting a post on Facebook and Twitter and before I knew it everyone [on campus] was talking about it in class,” Saylor said.
Saylor is a senior music industry major, and he said he still is figuring out what he wants to focus on. His is considering managing talent or working on events.
Saylor has a couple of shows coming up this spring semester. He will be accompanied by Oliver Rouch and Christian Bistany, both Capital students. He will perform alongside acts such as the Stalley, an A&R Music Bar partner and Wes Walker, the group involved with Jordan Belfort.
