Public Safety hires two new officers

Public Safety hired officers Jamie Lee Casto and Robert Rubio to help keep students safe on campus.

Casto is from Springfield, Ohio and has been a public safety officer at Capital for four and a half months.

When Casto was in sixth grade, he was asked what he wanted to be when he grew up. Casto wrote down that he wanted to become a police officer and made it his motivation to achieve that goal.

He became skeptical about what he wanted to do after graduating high school, but after he came across the letter he wrote in sixth grade, he read it as a sign.

Officer Casto started his work as a deputy  in Clark County, located in Springfield. He applied to work at Capital when he saw the campus and realized he wanted to help keep the students safe.

“I want to be able to make all of the kids know that if I’m working, they can come talk to me,” said officer Casto.

Rubio was born and raised in California. Growing up, he had mixed feeling about the police and emergency personals.

Rubio had seen these professions as something that was unattainable. He was inspired to become a police officer after seeing his group of friends go down the wrong path. He loves helping people and wants to  ensure that people do not make the same mistakes his friends made.

Rubio attended Columbus State Community College’s police academy. After graduating in 2015, he applied to become a Public Safety officer at Capital University. This position is Rubio’s first police job.

Officer Rubio said he plans to make a difference at Capital University.

“I speak English, Spanish, and a little bit of French. Hopefully that can help out with the students here,” said Rubio.

Both new officers advised that students should avoid walking alone late at night and that if they do, to walk with a friend.

Public Safety also offers the Rave Guardian Campus Safety App and officer escorting. The app is a virtual mobile tool that turns your phone into a safety device. The program is also a personal alarm system and crime-reporting and emergency-call tool combined into one app. Students also have the option for a public safety officer to escort them to any location.
