Flooding in Schaaf Hall has been a problem for years, and this year, the flood is affecting the south side of Schaaf to the courtyard.
Wesley Snow, interim director of facilities management, said that both halls and some other places on campus have the potential for water backup.
Flooding occurs when campus storm sewers reach their maximum capacity, leaving excess water nowhere to go.
Snow also noted that facilities management has made various efforts to keep flooding to a minimum, including shop vacuums, extractors, and mops.
“Recently, we did perform some maintenance on the interior drains to the storm laterals in Schaaf Hall,” Snow said.
Facilities is doing as much as they can to alleviate the issue.
This is not just a problem for campus buildings; it also affects walkways, where water settles after heavy rains. As fall and winter approach, students may have a difficult time keeping their feet dry.
When asked about any potential danger posed by the flooding, Snow said, “Safety is everyone’s priority and responsibility.”
He encourages everyone who notices a problem to reach out to facilities by phone at (614) 236-6400.
If a serious problem must be reported after hours, students should contact public safety by phone at (614) 236-6666. A dispatcher is on staff 24 hours, seven days a week.
General work requests can also be submitted electronically. For more information, visit capital.edu/facilities-management/
“[Flooding] has been a controlled issue as long as I have been here,” Snow said. He advises that students not worry too much about it.
