Lip Sync 2014: Sigma Alpha Beta’s tearful performance wins Golden Microphone

This past Saturday, Sigma Alpha Beta (SAB) won first place in the annual Lip Sync competition put on by Activities Management and Programming (AMP).

Many in the audience were left in tears after SAB’s performance which had their theme shaped around the Capital experience and ‘CapFam’ by going through all four years of college in one performance, from walking through the gates for the first time to graduation.

Derek Miller, a member of SAB, was one of the people at the heart of the group’s success and was a bit overwhelmed with how well they did.

“It was awesome,” Miller said, “almost surreal. We were hoping to get in the top three but we were not expecting to get first.”

Miller, along with other members of SAB had been preparing for just a little under a month.

“We started really talking about the choreography the week before we left for spring break.”

This marked the second time that SAB has won the coveted Golden Microphone, Lip Sync’s trophy. Many still remember their performance two years ago when they did a Harry Potter themed performance which won them first place. According to Miller, this performance was still fresh in the minds of many of SAB’s members as a reminder of the potential the group had.

Miller shared a sentiment that seemed to be popular among those in attendance.

“Everyone was great; there weren’t any bad groups,” Miller said.

SAB stole the show when they did a heartfelt goodbye to seniors who came into the hall in cap and gowns for a period before changing into all-white outfits and twerking it out on stage.

Close on SAB’s heels were the women on Delta Phi Epsilon who compiled a performance around the theme of the movie “Mean Girls.” According to one of D Phi E’s performers, Sebrina Herndon was their greatest strength.

“Our theme is what got people interested,” Herndon said. “We prepared for about three weeks.”

Herndon explained that despite how good her own group did, it was impossible not to cheer for friends in other groups, especially when those groups are so good.

“It’s so interesting to see what everybody came up with,” Herndon said. “All the other performances were good too. [My favorite was] definitely SAB. I’m not a senior, but I got emotional at the end of theirs. Everyone around me was crying.”
