The original “Super Mario Galaxy” game already feels huge, emotional, and kind of cinematic on its own, so turning it into a full movie seemed like a risky idea. After watching it though, it proved to work way better than expected and might even be one of the most visually impressive Nintendo adaptations so far. It keeps the fun energy of the Mario universe while adding a more emotional and space-focused story that feels a little different from the first Mario movie, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”
The story follows Mario, once again voiced by Chris Pratt, who gets pulled into a new intergalactic adventure after strange disturbances start happening across space. Instead of just the Mushroom Kingdom, this time Mario is traveling through galaxies and different planets to stop a growing cosmic threat. Along the way, he runs into familiar allies like Luigi and Princess Peach but also meets new characters like Rosalina, who plays a big role in guiding him through the universe and explaining what’s really going on. Bowser, voiced again by Jack Black, is also back, but this time his goals feel even more consequential since he’s trying to take control of multiple galaxies instead of just one kingdom.

One of the most interesting parts of the movie is how it builds on ideas from the original game. Fans of “Super Mario Galaxy” will recognize a lot of inspiration from the gravity-based platforming, space environments, and star collection mechanics. The movie does a good job of turning those gameplay ideas into actual story moments instead of just referencing them. It feels like they tried to take what made the game special and expand it into a full cinematic experience instead of just copying it.
The introduction of Rosalina is also one of the strongest parts of the movie. She has a calm and emotional presence that balances out the more chaotic energy from Mario and Bowser. Her backstory with the Lumas adds a deeper emotional layer to the film, and it actually gives the movie more meaning than a typical Mario story usually has. It feels more serious at times, but it still keeps the fun and lighthearted tone that Mario games and adaptations are known for.
Visually, this movie is on another level. The space environments are full of color, floating islands, and weird gravity effects that make every scene feel different. Some moments honestly feel like you’re watching a dream. The animation makes full use of the galaxy setting, with planets that flip upside down, rotate, or break apart during action scenes. It feels like the filmmakers really took advantage of the idea of space to make something more creative than a normal setting would allow.
The action scenes are also a big step up. Instead of just running through obstacle courses like the first movie, Mario is now jumping between planets, using gravity shifts, and fighting enemies in completely different environments. It makes everything feel more unpredictable and exciting. Even smaller scenes feel interesting because you never know how the environment is going to change.
Voice acting continues to be one of the movie’s strengths. Chris Pratt still brings a simple but solid version of Mario, while Jack Black as Bowser once again steals almost every scene he’s in. Bowser feels even more dramatic in this movie, especially because his goals are bigger and more serious. Rosalina also adds a calmer emotional tone that helps balance the cast and makes the story feel more grounded when it needs to be.
Even though the movie is impressive, it still has some issues. At times, the story can feel a little crowded because it’s trying to cover so many galaxies and characters at once. Some parts move quickly, and a few emotional moments don’t get as much time as they probably deserve. Also, audience members who are not familiar with the original game might not catch all of the references.
Overall, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is a really strong and creative follow-up to the Mario movie universe. It takes a more emotional and visually ambitious approach while still keeping the light-hearted energy that makes Mario so popular. It’s not perfect, but it’s definitely exciting and shows that Nintendo still has a lot of ideas left for future movies. If you liked the first Mario movie or the original game, this is definitely something worth watching.
