The G Campaign: Promoting Students to Go Greek

Some very enthusiastic individuals are active across campus to promote student involvement in Greek life. These students are leading a movement, known as the G Campaign, new to Capital University this fall.
Junior Sam Metcalf, President of the Interfraternity Council, and senior Alora Conner, President of the Pan Hellenic Council, are an integral part of Capital’s G Campaign and its mission.

“The G Campaign is made up of individuals representing every Greek chapter on campus, with a purpose of promoting Greek life as a whole, and not one specific chapter. Many of us are wearing the purple Go Greek shirts to be recognized for interested students to ask questions,” Metcalf says about the organization’s objective.

Conner believes the G Campaign is a functional means of achieving its goal of promoting Greek life altogether. “It is a tool to use for receiving unbiased advice, and for recruiting Greek life as a whole.”

The idea to bring the G Campaign to campus was brought about when Pan Hellenic Council and Interfraternity Council members went to the Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values Conference last spring. Similar G Campaign programs are run on other college campuses nationwide and provided a model for Capital to follow. Starting the program was relatively easy despite being entirely new to Capital. Director of Student and Community Engagement, Deana Wagner, played an instrumental role in organizing a practical vision for the G Campaign at Capital.

Former Assistant Director of Student and Community Engagement, David Gonzalez, also played a significant part in implementing the G Campaign and promoting it on social media. Gonzalez has since gone on to take a similar position at New York University.

Social media has been a large part of getting the message out about the G Campaign and its mission. Information about the G Campaign can be found online at the Fraternity and Sorority Life at Capital University Facebook page and @CapitalFSL on Twitter.

Students are encouraged to like the Fraternity and Sorority Life at Capital University Facebook page and follow CapitalFSL on Twitter. There are currently five fraternities and four sororities on campus at Capital University.

The G Campaign should not to be confused with the similar Rho Gama program already on campus, which serves as a recruitment guide for students.

When asked to provide advice for students interested in joining Greek life, Metcalf and Conner echoed their mission as leaders of the G Campaign.

Conner advises students to be open-minded when considering which sorority or fraternity to rush. “We want students to explore all the options available. Students should pick from which chapters they want to be a part of. Students can look to an upperclassman whose steps he or she wants to follow and wants to be like.”

Metcalf cautions from receiving individual references. “Speaking to individuals, although helpful, most likely will be biased whether that individual is a part of a specific chapter or not. That’s the function of the G Campaign, to provide a source from which students can receive unbiased advice and to promote Greek life as a whole, not one particular chapter. We want students to try to see themselves as part of each chapter to find which one is the best fit for them.”

The G Campaign has come a long way since its inception but still has a way to go as the school year gets underway.

Metcalf is excited to see what is to come. “It has been quite a journey so far, but it has certainly paid off and will continue to pay off in the long run.”
