The Suicide Squad is shaping up to be the best superhero film of the year, but will it be dethroned?
2021 has been a strange year for superhero movies. Due to the global pandemic we could not exactly go to the movie theatre to see them, which is unfortunate because Marvel has four movies scheduled to be released this year.
The weird thing, though, is that I do not think that Marvel will have put out the best superhero movie this year. Instead, there is a pretty good chance that DC will take the crown for the best superhero movie with James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
This is a bold claim considering that at the time of me writing this, only two of the four movies are out. The two that have yet to be released are Eternals and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
One pressing issue is that the Eternals trailer has kind of been brushed over. A lot of people are way more excited for the next Spider-Man movie.
This is prevalent on YouTube, where the trailer for Eternals has almost 24 million views but the trailer for Spider-man: No Way Home has more than 68 Million views.
Really, the biggest threat to The Suicude Squad is Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is scheduled for release at the tail end of the year.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings and Black Widow were both really good movies, but in my opinion they were more tied down by the appeal to a more family friendly audience.
The Suicide Squad, however, gave a lot more freedom of expression with the R-rating. To potentially counter this, Spider-Man: No Way Home has a lot of supervillains potentially returning from previous movies.
When you have a large amount of characters in a movie production, it can be difficult to balance all of them and give them separate time to shine.
James Gunn was pretty good at doing this for his movie, but I am not entirely sure that John Watts who is directing Spider-Man: No Way Home is going to be able to do so.
This might be especially difficult with two different studios who are constantly at ends with each other. It could wind up with a struggle for creative control between Sony, Marvel, and John which has happened to movies before.
Not to mention that as fans, we have high expectations for this movie. We want all of our favorite villains to be included in the film, but it’s a different question entirely whether it will happen or not. I personally hope to see plenty of Green Goblin in the movie.
This does not guarantee that the movie will be bad without our favorite villains or superheroes. In fact, I think it still has plenty of potential to become the best superhero movie of 2021. It is important to remember that nothing is set in stone until the movie comes out.
This is the big Marvel release of the year. I along with many other very enthusiastic Marvel fans are eagerly waiting for the release on Dec. 17. Will it be the best superhero movie of 2021? Only time will tell.
