Student Government will be hosting a resource fair on Nov. 15, where students can learn about many of the services offered through the university, including a new service created by Student Government where students can anonymously address concerns they see within classes and areas of study.
Students can send issues and concerns about courses to the Student Government academic committee email. These complaints will be reviewed by committee members, and eventually the members will take complaints to the attention of the department chair without using the student’s name.
Most of the time, committee members will address problems within their area of study, but for bigger issues, the entire committee may take initiative on the concern.
“Your professor might be the department chair,” said Chelsea Kempton, chair of the academic committee, “and going to the department chair might be kind of iffy, and a lot of students worry about backlash.”
The committee hopes to be a liaison between students and academic chairs and professors, who may be kind of difficult to talk to. Through this, they hope be able to create better relationships between students and professors and eventually a better environment in classes.
“I think sometimes, professors don’t know what they’re doing really well, and they also don’t know what they’re doing really poorly,” Kempton said. “So it’s just trying to find that way to increase the rigor, make classes better; over all, just improve academics.”
Students will have the opportunity to learn about other programs on campus as well. Programs such as Career Development, the HECC program, OhioLink, RefWorks, and study abroad will have representatives at the resource fair.
The goal of the resource fair is to make students aware of the services on campus in addition with how to use them.
The fair is free to attend and Student Government is offering free pizza, as well as opportunities to win gift cards. Also, it’s an opportunity for students to get to know the resources that Capital has to offer for them. The fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Denvy-Bowman lounge of the Student Union, and the event is open to all students.
To use the academic committee’s new service, students can email sgaac@capital.edu with any concerns they’d like addressed.
