Capital fall sports rundown for September

School is back and that means the fall sports here at Capital are already in the swing of things, with many of the fall sports already starting their seasons on the right foot.

The Men’s Golf team started off their season with a strong showing at the Gatorade Intercollegiate. The team finished the tournament in the top spot out of the nine teams participating. Over two days, they finished with a score of 565, setting multiple school and tournament records in the process.

The next event of the season came in the form of the Belterra Intercollegiate. The event, taking place over two days, saw the team carry some of that early season momentum. Ultimately they finished in fourth place out of the fourteen teams that participated. Next up for the team is the Columbus Cup, hosted by Otterbein, the event takes place on Sept. 25 and 26.

Women’s Soccer started their season on the first of September, and after close games they still sit winless. Neither of the first two games were out of reach though, losing both games 1-0. The women took a 1-1 tie into overtime against Grove City, before giving up the late goal in the 101st minute. Following another close 1-0 loss and a 0-0 draw, they look to get their first win of the season against Hope on Sept. 25.

Men’s Soccer has also started the season hot. After five games, they sit with a 5-1 record, having outscored their opponents 16-5. They look to keep their hot streak when they play Case Western.

Leading the way for the boys on the soccer field is Sam Spirk, Veron Fongeh, and Jack Kossoudji who each have three goals on the season. Bailey Lach leads the team in assists while goalie Conner Sexton leads the team in wins, getting the victory in two of his starts.

Through six matches, the volleyball team sits with a record of 1-5. After their first match of the season was declared a no contest, the girls lost a close match to Franklin. In the very next match they got their first win of the season, defeating Washington & Jefferson in three straight sets. This victory marked the first for new head coach Nikki Van Cleave.

The Pam Briggs Classic here at Capital didn’t bring the results the team was looking for, dropping all three of their matches over the course of one weekend. With the Battling Bishop tournament cancelled the girls are looking to get back in the win column against Wooster.

Both cross country teams are back in action for the first time since 2019. The first meet was the Polar Bear Invitational. The men sent three to compete, while the women had four runners in the event. Overall the men finished in 41st, 62nd, and 92nd places. The women finished in 16th, 46th, 66th, and 67th, with the last two runners finishing the course together.

During the All-Ohio Championships, neither group placed as a team, but showcased strong performances throughout both races.

Also getting started is the Capital tennis teams. The Men’s team is looking to kick off their season on Sept. 24 after the first three matches of their season were cancelled. The women sit at 1-0 after a dominating win against Miami-Middletown. They will also be back in action on Sept. 24 taking on Mt. Vernon Nazarene.

It is a busy time at Capital with fall sports returning for the first time in a long time. Be sure to go out and support our athletes in their fall seasons.
