Columbus is largely known for its love of good food and craft beers, but no one ever really talks about the incredible breakfast pastries that are all over the place. Inspired by the Butler County Donut Trail, three Chimes staffers decided to make a tiny Columbus version of some of the best doughnut shops around the city (in no particular order).
Jolly Pirate Donuts
Jolly Pirate Donuts is a classic, old-fashioned place to get your doughnuts with locations in Reynoldsburg, Grove City, and Newark. Their flavors are signature, like peanut and blueberry, and they also have cookies and some “fancy” doughnuts like bismarks and pecan butterflies.
Jolly Pirate Donuts are more dense and cakey than a typical, fluffy doughnut. They crumble a bit more and seem strange at first, but the flavor is intense and delicious.
Regular doughnuts are 99 cents each or $8.99 for their baker’s dozen, and the fancy doughnuts are $1.45 each or $14.49 for a baker’s dozen.
Amy’s Donuts
Amy’s Donuts on Georgesville Road has some of the wildest and most exciting doughnut flavors in Columbus. From Homer Simpson to creme brulee to maple bacon fudge, the possibilities are truly endless.
The flavors at Amy’s are almost always a hit, and there’s something for everyone. Whether it’s a crazy combination or just a simple glazed doughnut, they’ve got you covered.
Amy’s Donuts are a bit pricier than most doughnuts, but they’re worth it. The doughnuts are six for $9 and are available for pre-order on their website. Their drive-thru runs 24 hours a day for all your late-night doughnut needs.
Buckeye Donuts
Buckeye Donuts is a Columbus staple. With two locations on High Street, one located conveniently in the heart of Ohio State’s campus, this 24-hour shop is a necessity for students all over the capital city.
The doughnuts are pretty classic — they have glazed and powdered sugar, and some more up-scale types like cinnamon buns and apple fritters. The aesthetic within both locations is sort of old-fashioned, very homey and comforting.
Doughnuts are $1.20 each or $10.99 for a dozen.
Duck Donuts
Located near Polaris, Duck Donuts is different from most doughnut shops in that they make your doughnuts to order. Customers start with a vanilla cake doughnut and then choose a coating, topping, and drizzle.
Struggling to come up with a flavor combination? Duck Donuts has featured doughnuts like glazed with apple, streusel, salted caramel drizzle, and maple icing with chopped bacon.
The doughnuts are reasonably priced for being fresh and custom-made, starting at $1.50 each, $7.95 for six, and $14.25 for a dozen. They have an online order form to make your doughnut trip easier, especially if you plan on picking up more than one or two doughnuts.
